Religious Fundamentalism Treated As A Curable Mental Illness?

Note that this is about fanatical fundamentalists, rather than merely true believers of any faith. If it’s classified as a mental illness and subsequently used to excuse the actions of people like Westboro, however, this is by no means any step forward for science or understanding.

Steven Seagal tried to set up congressional trip to Chechnya

wilwheaton:

Congressional sources say that the proposed visit caused a split within the delegation, with several members uncomfortable about traveling into a region ruled by a Kremlin-backed strongman with a spotty human rights record. Along with Rohrabacher, the delegation to Russia includes Reps. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), Bill Keating (D-Mass), Steve King (R-Iowa), Paul Cook (R-Calif.) and Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.), ABC News reported.

Because sending Michelle Fucking Bachmann and Steve King anywhere other than an insane asylum is such a great idea for diplomacy.

For fuck’s sake, Steven Segal; what the hell were you thinking?

Given the less-than-stellar safety record of Russian aircraft, this could have been a welcome chance to rid ourselves of Bachmann, et.al, whose existence I regard as a fundamental affront to humanity. A great opportunity missed, in that respect!

little soul, big world: Buddhism: On Transgender People

ceruleancynic:

crowvo:

The other day I had the privilege of asking a practicing Buddhist (one who has been practicing for 30 years) for his thoughts on any subject. The others who were there all had interesting questions of their own (How do Buddhists view abortion? How much negative karma is generated from assisted suicide? What would a Buddhist do if they were forced to kill in self-defense?), and the answers provided were each logical in terms of what a Buddhist believes.

I asked: “Would Buddhists see a gender reassignment surgery as positive, or negative?” I needed to elaborate quite a bit until he understood that I was talking about FtM’s and MtF’s. As soon as he understood, he gave this answer without hesitation:

Buddhists would see this is as positive karma. It is likely that the individual had lived as the other gender in their previous life, and were so strongly attached to that body that their mind is completely disoriented in the wrong gender. By taking the hormones and performing the surgery, the mind would be at ease as it is back in familiar ground. From there, that individual would undoubtedly generate much more positive karma, as they would no longer feel horribly out of place in their own body. Without question, medical procedures that can cure dysphoria, depression, jealousy, and anxiety should be done.

this makes me simply very happy.

There is now a teen girl in Florida who’s facing prison - just because her girlfriend’s anti-gay parents were angry that their daughter was dating another young woman. As soon as she turned 18, they reported her to the police and she was arrested for “assaulting” a minor.

But this isn’t about a crime - it’s about a high school romance between two teen girls - and angry, homophobic parents who want to destroy a young woman’s life. Kate faces years in prison or house arrest, and would have to register on a national sex offender registry if enough of us don’t speak out. She did nothing wrong. She just happened to fall in love in high school like so many other teens in the world.

Florida Assistant State Attorney Brian Workman has the power to end this crazy situation. If thousands of us speak out, the pressure will grow for him to reverse his decision.

I just signed the petition to free Kate - will you join me?

Over at The Rumpus is an interesting conversation — “Fresh Air Fail” — between writer Martha Bayne and her friend and fellow writer Zoe Zolbrob. Bayne wrote an essay last August about finding herself unexpectedly pregnant and later miscarrying. We booked her for an interview. The interview didn’t go well and never ran. She reflects in this conversation on the experience of talking to Terry and she is wonderfully insightful about it.

Zoe Zolbrod: But perhaps your question about whether you did yourself a disservice has more to do with you personally, as you continue to work through the effects of that watershed couple months. It’s interesting that after the awkward interview with Terry Gross, when you felt like, to some extent, your privacy was being invaded, your question is whether you should have held less back originally. I would think your experience might have led you to wonder why you had put so much out there in the first place—although in all our conversations, I’ve never heard you second-guess your decision to publish the essay. So when you ask if you were doing yourself a disservice in not going deeper into your own psychology or into the full complexity of the situation, are you really asking more generally about personal writing in general? What would have a satisfying conversation with Terry Gross looked like to you—what would it have covered?
Martha Bayne: Well, one key thing that I forgot is that to a large degree, these interviews function as a stand-in for the story itself. So you’re being asked to re-tell the story you already told on paper, for those who don’t know it, rather than have a conversation that builds on the existing information. I remember subconsciously chafing against this at the time, thinking, Why is she asking me these dumb questions? But I blame myself completely for that part.

We sympathize.
You can read the essay that prompted it all — “Knocked Over: On Biology, Magical Thinking and Choice” here.

This is a brilliant article, with some great insights into the matters of motherhood, aging & choice. I was struck by this question especially: “What could true freedom of choice look like in this country? It would mean a social and political structure that looks out for the well-being of actual real-live children – and their mothers — rather than using their hypothetical lives as weapons in a neverending demagoguic death match.”

Le génie du mal [The genius of evil, aka; Lucifer]; Guillaume Geefs

“The statue was originally a commission for Geefs’ younger brother Joseph, who completed it in 1842 and installed it the following year. It generated controversy at once and was criticized for not representing a Christian ideal. The cathedral administration declared that “this devil is too sublime.” The local press intimated that the work was distracting the “pretty penitent girls” who should have been listening to the sermons.” [x]

I just had a long—and as usual, pointless—argument with my dad about this. The fact that we’re descended from Huguenots who came here seeking religious freedom & thus would presumably be offended at such assertions of ‘Christianity über alles’ had no effect on my dad’s, “She’s very attractive so I would vote for her” stance. I’ve got to stop thinking that my dad might listen to reason or basic logic.
